On Saturday 9th December we took a team of 21 athletes aged 12-14 to ‘The British Rowing Indoor Championships’ held at The NEC in Birmingham. Competing against the Best Clubs and Schools in the UK, was never going to be easy, especially being a new club that only started in September.
With over 2752 competitors racing in 157 races, winning a medal was always going to be a challenge, but one we were prepared for.
Against all the odds Abdullah S. stepped up to do battle in the Boys Yr10 – U15 500m race. All 42 competitors, had their sight set on the Gold Medal and title of British Champion. Abdullah in his first race was understandbly nevous, but produced a truly amazing and mature performance, dominating the race and smashing his PB by 3 seconds in a winning time of 1:25.9, a fraction of a second outside the British Record.
Congratulations to Abdullah – Infinity Boat Clubs first Britsh Champion.
Earlier in the Girls Y9 – U14 – 4 minute race Willow B raced very well finishing 7th out of a field of 81 in her first major race. This was truly an amazing achievement.
With all our other competitors racing extremely well, often against older opposition, many smashed their PB’s, this was a true indictment of their hard work and determination to perform well.
Ciaran and Harry their coaches were very proud.
Infinity Boat Club believes in offering free rowing for those who would not normally get the opportunity to row, we work closely with local Teesside schools to identify those who would most benefit from this great opportunity, but we also welcome enquiries from anyone who would like to give it a go.
